THE "IKAT" TECHNIQUE

Ikat is a fabric which is patterned through the technique of resist dyeing.

Unlike other methods of resist dyeing (like tie-dye, batik or block print) where the resist is applied onto the woven fabric, in ikat the resist is applied to the yarns and they are dyed before being woven into fabric. In fact, the word ikat literally means "to tie" or "to bind".
